How AI Search Changes SEO for Local Businesses

You’ve been doing SEO for your local business the way everyone told you to — Google Business Profile filled out, a few blog posts, maybe an agency on retainer — and your traffic is dropping anyway. Somewhere between last summer and now, AI Overviews started answering questions before anyone clicks. If you’ve been trying to figure out how AI search changes SEO for local business owners in South Florida (or anywhere else), you’re not imagining it. The rules moved.

Here’s what’s real, what’s noise, and what to actually do about it — from a shop that builds and maintains sites for local clients every day.

What actually changed

Two things, mostly.

First, Google’s AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of all searches, and when they do, the click-through rate on the organic result underneath took a beating. A Seer Interactive study of 2.43 billion impressions tracked organic CTR on AI Overview queries falling from 1.76% to 0.61% by late 2025, before recovering to about 2.4% by early 2026 as Google tuned the format. Ranking #1 is worth less than it was two years ago, because half the time nobody scrolls past the AI answer.

Second, an entirely new referral channel opened. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google’s AI Mode now recommend specific businesses by name. Someone types “who’s the best web designer in Fort Lauderdale for a small e-commerce site” and gets three names and a paragraph of reasoning. If yours is one of them, you get a warm, informed lead. If not, you never knew the search happened.

Why local businesses get hurt less than you’d expect

Informational queries — “what is a sitemap,” “how do I fix 404 errors” — got hit hardest. Those are exactly the questions AI answers cleanly with no click needed. But local, high-intent queries (“plumber near me,” “web designer Miami,” “sushi delivery Coral Gables”) still route people to actual businesses because they need a phone number, a booking form, a menu, an address. AI Overviews on those queries tend to cite local businesses rather than replace them, and Forbes reported that brands cited inside an AI Overview earn about 35% more organic clicks than uncited brands on the same query.

Translation: for a local business, the goal is no longer “rank #1.” It’s “be the business the AI names.”

How AI search decides which local business to recommend

This is where the practical answer lives. Neither Google’s AI Overviews nor ChatGPT crawls your site in real time. They pull from indexed sources they already trust. Roughly in order of weight:

  • Your Google Business Profile — categories, service area, hours, photos, reviews. Still the single biggest signal for “near me” AI answers.
  • Third-party citations — Yelp, Bing Places, industry directories, local news write-ups. LLMs treat these as votes that your business exists and does what it says.
  • Your website’s structured dataLocalBusiness, Organization, and FAQPage schema tell AI what your business is in machine-readable form.
  • Clear, cite-able content on your own site — plain-English pages that answer the question the searcher asked, with facts stated once, cleanly. AI systems prefer content structured like an answer.
  • Reviews and review responses, recency-weighted — a profile that hasn’t earned a review in eight months looks stale.

The six things that actually move the needle in 2026

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile like it’s a job. Every field. Every service. Weekly posts. Fresh photos. Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days.
  2. Verify your Bing Places listing. It’s free, takes twenty minutes, and ChatGPT (which runs on Bing’s index) treats verified listings as evidence you’re a real business. Skipping this leaves the AI-assistant channel closed.
  3. Add LocalBusiness and FAQPage schema to your site. This is a one-time technical job. Done right, it’s the difference between an AI reading your page as “some text” and reading it as “a plumber in Broward County that answers these ten common questions.”
  4. Publish one plain-English answer article per month. Format matters more than length: an actual question as the h2, a clear paragraph answer under it, no throat-clearing. This is what LLMs quote.
  5. Keep NAP (Name, Address, Phone) identical everywhere. Yelp, Facebook, Bing, Apple Maps, your website footer, your invoices. Duplicates and typos split trust, and both Google and ChatGPT downgrade you for it.
  6. Ask for reviews consistently. A trickle of new reviews beats a wall of old ones. Recency is a signal.

When you don’t need to worry about any of this

If you’re a service business booked three months out on word-of-mouth and referrals, AI search changing isn’t your problem — losing your best technician is. If your entire client base comes from one industry group or one wholesaler’s directory, put your energy there. Not every local business needs to fight for Google traffic; some already have a better channel and search is a nice-to-have.

The honest cutoff: if you get less than about 10% of your leads from search today, spend your first hour of the week somewhere else. Come back to this list when search actually moves your revenue.
